چکیده

We present the full evaluation of a cold atom gyroscope based on atom interferometry. We have performed extensive studies to determine the systematic errors, scale factor and sensitivity. We demonstrate that the acceleration noise can be efficiently removed from the rotation signal, allowing us to reach the fundamental limit of the quantum projection noise for short term measurements. The technical limits to the long term sensitivity and accuracy have been identified, clearing the way for the next generation of ultra-sensitive atom gyroscopes. ∗ Present address: Department of Physics, Durham University, Rochester Building, South Road, Durham DH1 3LE, England † Present address: European Gravitational Observatory, Via E. Self-alignment of a compact large-area atomic Sagnac interferometer

We report on the realization of a compact atomic Mach–Zehndertype Sagnac interferometer of 13.7 cm length, which covers an area of 19mm2 previously reported only for large thermal beam interferometers. According to Sagnac’s formula, which holds for both light and atoms, the sensitivity for rotation rates increases linearly with the area enclosed by the interferometer. The use of cold atoms inst...

Atom interferometer gyroscope with spin-dependent phase shifts induced by light near a tune-out wavelength.

Tune-out wavelengths measured with an atom interferometer are sensitive to laboratory rotation rates because of the Sagnac effect, vector polarizability, and dispersion compensation. We observed shifts in measured tune-out wavelengths as large as 213 pm with a potassium atom beam interferometer, and we explore how these shifts can be used for an atom interferometer gyroscope.

Pressure sensor realized with polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber-based Sagnac interferometer.

A novel intrinsic fiber optic pressure sensor realized with a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) based Sagnac interferometer is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A large wavelength-pressure coefficient of 3.42 nm/MPa was measured using a 58.4 cm long PM-PCF as the sensing element. Owing to the inherently low bending loss and thermal dependence of the PM-PCF, the pr...

Polarization Sagnac interferometer with a common-path local oscillator for heterodyne detection

We describe a free-space common-path polarization Sagnac interferometer. The polarization Sagnac interferometer is used in a symmetric fashion with detection on the dark fringe of the interference to avoid photodetector saturation when high-powered illumination is used. By modulating the carrier field that is reflected from the interferometer, we generate a local oscillator for heterodyne detec...

Long-term stability of an area-reversible atom-interferometer Sagnac gyroscope.

We report the first demonstration of a matter-wave interference gyroscope that meets both the short-term noise and long-term stability requirements for high accuracy navigation. This performance level resulted from implementation of a novel technique to precisely reverse the input axis of the gyroscope.
